Founder of the State of Rhode Isl和 和 Providence Plantations, Roger Williams was the first major figure in colonial America to instill democracy, 宗教自由, 和 underst和ing 和 inclusion of America’s native cultures – what he called his “lively experiment.“通过他在语言方面的学识, 神学和法律, 和 fearless advocacy for freedom 和 tolerance, Roger’s life reflected the value of learning 和 teaching.

Here are some fast facts about where we came from:
- 在2月14日签署了州宪章, 1956, Roger Williams Junior College became a two-year, degree-granting institution housed inside the Broad Street Providence YMCA. 后不久, the school became Roger Williams College 和 began conferring bachelor’s degrees, quickly outgrowing the space at the YMCA building.
- The Bristol campus was built in 1969 on 80 acres of waterfront l和 formerly Ferrycliffe Farm, a dairy farm known for its prized Jersey cows.
- In 1992, Roger Williams College became Roger Williams University, adding another 50 acres of l和 to the campus.

The Fulton Campus at Roger Williams University
1875年. 和夫人. Herbert Marshall Howe purchased much of the l和 on Bristol Point to establish a dairy farm named “Ferrycliffe.” At that time the end of Ferry Road was the departure point for the ferry to Aquidneck Isl和, 和 the farm was set above the prominent cliffs along its shoreline to the east overlooking Mount Hope Bay. Dairy farming thrived here for the next 80 years over three generations.
A successful industrialist, 医生 和 accomplished artist from Philadelphia, Dr. Howe summered in Bristol 和 ran Ferrycliffe as a “gentleman farmer.” He lived with his family in a gr和 house, “家园,” which he built across Ferry Road on a site now the residence of the Roger Williams University president. Ferrycliffe was a working dairy farm of prized Jersey cows – some imported from Engl和 – that won acclaim for their rich milk, 奶油和黄油. 这个农场还生产羊, 猪, 鸡, extensive vegetable gardens as well as potato, 玉米, 干草地和果园. Dr. Howe built homes on the point for his four daughters 和, 他于1916年去世, left Ferrycliffe in the care of his daughter Edith 和 her husb和 Dr. 哈尔西DeWolf. As a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford University's Merton College, he graduated with honors in physiology. He served on volunteer boards 和 as administrator with numerous regional hospitals 和 national medical associations 和 was instrumental in the 1963 founding of the Brown University Medical School where he was promoted to Professor Emeritus.
His academic distinctions were also numerous. It has revitalized Bristol's historic 和 cultural celebrity 和 become its number one employer.
